In 2023, the Ukrainian educational project STEM is FEM received about 4,000 applications from girls eager to participate in STEM-related activities. This achievement was shared by the project’s founder, IT entrepreneur Sergey Tokarev. Throughout the year, STEM is FEM focused on urban planning, post-war reconstruction, and launched new initiatives like the “Urbanism” course, the podcast “Science: Women’s Voices,” and the educational module “Light Industry.”

A key focus was youth involvement in post-war reconstruction. The team behind STEM is FEM believes that rebuilding Ukrainian cities requires the engagement of citizens from diverse backgrounds—genders, ages, and experiences. Sergey Tokarev emphasized the importance of this, noting, “It’s crucial to engage the younger generation in restoring Ukrainian cities, ensuring that as many citizens as possible gain knowledge about urban planning and the future of our cities.”

One of the year’s highlights was the “Urbanism” course. Over four months, 50 girls explored urban planning and architecture, creating reconstruction projects for three war-torn Ukrainian cities: Ichinia, Trostyanets, and Okhtyrka. The final projects were presented in April 2023, and the top ten designs were refined by professionals for potential implementation. Three course graduates earned internships with Urban Reform NGO, contributing to research for Okhtyrka’s master plan.

After that, STEM is FEM collaborated with Diia.Education and now, the course Urbanism is available on this national educational platform. The 17-workshop course covers topics such as urban studies, post-war reconstruction, and inclusivity in public space design. Sergey Tokarev stressed the importance of making this knowledge accessible to more young Ukrainians to prepare them for the significant task of rebuilding the country.

In September 2023, the project partnered with Ukrainian lingerie brand brabrabra to launch the “Light Industry” module. Thirty girls participated, learning from industry experts about clothing design and production while developing their own lingerie collections. This module broadened the project’s scope, emphasizing innovation in industries outside of traditional STEM fields.

Elizaveta Korenko, head of STEM is FEM, highlighted the shortage of skilled professionals in STEM fields, particularly in Ukraine. Despite the growing demand for expertise, few initiatives focus on encouraging young people to pursue these careers. “The shortage of experts does not happen at the hiring stage; it begins when young people do not pursue these fields of study. We must provide them with knowledge today to have highly qualified professionals tomorrow,” she explained.

To further inspire young women in science, STEM is FEM and the online platform Speka launched the podcast “Science: Women’s Voices.” The podcast explores the careers and personal journeys of female researchers, offering role models to girls considering STEM careers.

Sergey Tokarev remains a strong advocate for diversity in STEM. He believes that progress depends on bringing a wide range of perspectives into the field. “Encouraging women to pursue STEM is not just about equality—it is about innovation. We can only achieve true progress by working together,” Tokarev emphasized.
